David Cameron: We need to do more to tackle trans discrimination

More needs to be done to tackle “specific issues of discrimination” against the trans community, David Cameron has said.

The Prime Minister made the comments in an interview to BuzzFeed.

He was asked if trans rights represented the next “battle ground” for equality following the legislation of same-sex marriage.

Mr Cameron replied: “I think we need to take a look at what the issues are and what the specific issues of discrimination that trans people have.

“I think that’s important”. He continued: “I think one of the most important things is what happens in our schools, particularly homophobic and biphobic bullying.

“It’s one of the reasons I became so convinced about gay marriage,” he said.

“It’s only when a society says marriage is there for everybody whether you’re straight or gay … you end this idea that it’s somehow fair to criticise people or do down people because of their sexuality.”

David Cameron last week agreed to take part in a PinkNews readers’ Q&A ahead of May’s general election.

Writing exclusively for PinkNews in May last year, on the day same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales, the Prime Minister said the reform sends “a powerful message to young people” that “you are equal whether straight or gay”.
