This Conchita Wurst performance contains an unexpected extra twist.

The Austrian drag artist was set to perform to open the grand finale of Sweden’s Eurovision selection, Melodifestivalen 2015.

However, the Eurovision winner failed to make it to Stockholm in time for yesterday’s dress rehearsal – leaving the production team to search for a stand in.

The show’s executive producer Christer Björkman valiantly slipped on a dress and wig to perform the number ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’ in place of Conchita – and delivered an unexpected belter, nailing the number.

It’s not clear how much warning Mr Björkman had – though from the clip it would appear he didn’t have time to shave his arms.

Mr Björkman has had some practice, however – representing Sweden at Eurovison himself in 1992.

SVT explained in a statement: “It has long been planned for Conchita Wurst to open the grand final of Melodifestivalen 2015.

“However, the artist could not arrive in Stockholm until Saturday when the finals are held.

“Therefore, the production team had to find a stand-in for the dress rehearsal before an audience on Friday night.

“The responsibility fell on Melodifestivalen executive producer Christer Björkman who took to the stage at the Friends Arena dressed in a tight gold dress, and performed last year’s winning song in the Eurovision.”

Conchita Wurst is still expected to perform at the grand final tonight, which is available to watch across Europe on SVTPlay.

The singer has become a champion for LGBT rights since winning Eurovision last year – performing at both the United Nations and European Parliament.
