Alabama judge grants divorce to same-sex couple
A judge in the US state of Alabama has, a year after denying the request, granted a same-sex couple a divorce.
Madison County Circuit Judge Karen Hall on Thursday allowed Shrie Michelle Richmond and Kirsten Allysse Richmond to divorce.
The couple married in the state of Iowa in 2012.
Despite filing for divorce in March 2014, Judge Hall then said she didn’t have the power to grant the divorce.
Last week the Alabama Supreme Court put on hold a ruling which allowed same-sex marriage, and the couple re-filed for divorce previously on 9 February, when a federal judge struck down the state’s same-sex marriage ban.
The US Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling on same-sex marriage this summer.
