The eggs of a spider the bite of which can give men 4-hour erections, and can be deadly, was found in a banana from Tesco.

The Costa Rican bananas purchased by Maria Layton, 43, from Tesco, and contained eggs from the Brazillian Wandering Spider, reports the Telegraph.

As well as being deadly, the spider’s bite can give men a painful erection for up to four hours.

The venom of the spider is currently being studied for use in treatments for erectile dysfunction.

After opening the bananas, Ms Layton said she noticed that the spider eggs were embedded in the side of the packet in a cocoon.

She contacted Tesco customer services who told her to bring back the bananas, including the spider eggs so she could get a refund, at which point she put the banana in a container in the freezer to kill them.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “Our policy is for the customer to take the product to the store where it can be investigated.

“We don’t have a service whereby someone can go out to the home.”
