George Takei and his husband have taken to social media to give the state of Alabama the finger for refusing to recognise a federal ruling legalising same-sex marriage.

Takei and his other half Brad Altman posted a photo to Instagram with their ring fingers held up, and urged followers to do the same.

They responded to Justice Roy Moore’s order to stop all same-sex weddings from taking place.

“I was genuinely dismayed to hear that a state’s highest court would flout a federal court order,” he said in a statement.

“You know, 60 years ago it wasn’t considered a real marriage if a white person wanted to marry an Asian American like me. And now look, I married a white dude. Times change. Attitudes change. And for the better.”

Since their photo was posted, a large number of follwers have posted their own, using the hashtag “#LuvUAlabama”.
