Actor Stephen Fry has announced his departure from Twitter, as he reportedly plans to take a three-month “holiday” from the spotlight.

The QI host is well-known as one of the most prolific tweeters, amassing nearly 9 million followers.

However, he has announced that following his marriage to fellow comedian Elliott Spencer last month, he will take some time to himself.

He wrote: “Dearest twitter followers and other interested (or bored) parties,

“Just a quick note to say that I’m going to be away until May.

“During that time I will be taking a holiday from twitter and, with a few exceptions, not tweeting at all.

“Well, off I go. Have a wonderful time without me. I know you will.”

Fry faced intense media scrutiny after news leaked of his engagement to Spencer, with paparazzi reportedly staking out the pair’s house and doorstepping their relatives.

He last week revealed that the attention had been so fierce that the couple even planted a fake wedding date, “in case [the computer was] hacked or in case there was a mole within the borough”.

After managing to marry unimpeded in a low-key registry office ceremony, the pair are closely guarding details of their honeymoon.

Fry said: “We are going off to a secret location, as honeymoons must be”.
