Obama predicts Supreme Court will soon end ‘patchwork’ same-sex marriage laws

President Barack Obama has predicted that the Supreme Court will soon make a ruling in favour of same-sex marriage, saying “it doesn’t make sense” to have a “patchwork system”.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News, President Obama commented on some judges in the state of Alabama who have flouted a ruling which means same-sex couples can marry there.

He said he thought the US Supreme Court would soon make a sweeping ruling.

Obama said: “My sense is that the Supreme Court is about to make a shift, one that I welcome, which is to recognize that — having hit a critical mass of states that have recognized same-sex marriage — it doesn’t make sense for us to now have this patchwork system,

“It’s time to recognize that under the equal protection clause of the United States [Constitution], same-sex couples should have the same rights as anybody else.”

According to the autobiography of Obama’s former political strageist David Axelrod, Obama lied to say he opposed same-sex marriage during the 2008 presidential campaign, to appease Christian voters

US Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday confirmed that the government will appoint an openly gay LGBT Rights Envoy.

President Obama previously appointed a LGBT Liason within the White House but the new envoy will have a different, more global role.

In the UK, Ed Miliband has said that the Labour Party will appoint an LGBT Rights Envoy should the party be elected. Lord Michael Cashman will take the role.
