Kevin Hart: I won’t play a gay character, I’d worry what people would think

Comedian Kevin Hart attends the WSJ Tech D.Live at Montage Laguna Beach on November 13, 2018 in Laguna Beach, California.

Actor Kevin Hart has revealed he refuses to play a gay character – and turned down one role for being “too flagrant”.

The stand-up comedian and actor was speaking as part of a promotional tour for The Wedding Ringer, which was released in the US this week.

Speaking to Power 105.1, the actor revealed that he turned down a role in Tropic Thunder which involved gay sex.

He said: “I turned down… one role I turned down, Tropic Thunder. Brandon T Jackson, he got the part.

But in my defence – first of all, before I say this, I’m politically correct, to the gay community I respect and appreciate you…

The part was way [gayer] in the beginning… the dude was doing a lot of stuff in the draft that I read.

“It was real flagrant. There was a lot of stuff, and I thought ‘I can’t do this’.”

When asked directly if he would play a gay character, he said “no”.

He added: “I feel I can’t [play a gay character] because I don’t think I’m really going to dive into that role 100 percent, because of the insecurities about myself trying to play that part.

“What I think people are going to think while I’m trying to do this is going to stop me from playing that part the way I’m supposed to.”

The comic said in 2014 he would not tell jokes about gay people out of “respect people of all orientations” because it is “a sensitive topic”.

He also praised rapper Frank Ocean, after he came out as gay.
