The city of West Hollywood now requires all single-stall toilets to be gender-neutral.

Existing businesses have 60 days to make the change. Gendered signs on single-stall toilets must be taken down and businesses cannot restrict them to just one sex. It does not apply to toilets with more than one stall.

West Hollywood is a particularly LGBT-friendly city in Los Angeles county. It is well known for having a large population of gay men.

The move is intended to be more welcoming to people with “non-traditional gender identity” but the city states it will also help a number of other groups such as disabled people with carers of a different gender and parents with young children. It also mentions “the many people who have waited in line for a gender-specific restroom when stalls for the opposite sex are empty.”

Washington DC and Philadelphia have previously passed similar bills.
