A shockingly high number of gay and lesbian Mormons have undergone attempts to “cure” themselves of their same-sex attractions.

A survey by Utah State University, found that 80% of respondents had tried to change their sexual orientation, and that 70% of gay and lesbian Mormons leave the Church of the Latter Day Saints.

Less surprisingly, the survey also found that almost 70% of marriages involving a gay man and a woman ended in divorce, compared to just 25% of marriages between a straight man and a woman.

The survey asked questions to 1,612 gay and lesbian Mormons and former Mormons across 48 states.

Despite the survey’s weighting possibly being questionable, researchers working on it said it was a fairly accurate representation of issues faced by gay and lesbian Mormons.
