Soho gay bar Green Carnation to close

Nick Duffy January 12, 2015

A popular London gay bar is to close its doors this month, to be redeveloped as a new venue.

The Oscar Wilde-inspired Green Carnation bar – located on Greek Street, off Soho Square – has served the community for a number of years.

However, it will close this week – amid plans for renovation and the launch of a new venue.

According to a statement, the owners plan to “completely remodel and refurbish the venue across all four floors”.

The statement said: “After 10 successful years and several different guises we have decided to close the third chapter of its current incarnation aptly named Green Carnation to make way for an exciting new concept.

“The concept, secretly under wraps, will be and brand new, fresh identity that matches with the aspirations of Soho clientele.”

Popular London drag and cabaret venue Madame JoJo’s closed its doors in November after its license was revoked, in a blow to the Soho gay scene.

Manbar, the popular gay venue on Charing Cross Road, London, aso ceased trading in January.

Actor and broadcaster Stephen Fry is to meet tonight with an organisation which aims to keep London’s Soho balanced and affordable, following a number of closures.
