After several months of confusion, all same-sex couples in the US state of Florida can finally marry.

Couples began marrying in Miami Dade county this afternoon, after a ruling only applying to that county took effect there.

A second ruling, made in August by US District Judge Robert L Hinkle declared the state’s same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional.

Hinkle’s ruling was stayed until midnight on, 5 January, but took effect as he refused to stay the ruling.

The first couples married on Monday in Miami Dade, with others planning to marry across the state.

Florida becomes the 36th whole state in the US to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.
