US groceries chain extends benefits to married gay couples
US grocery chain Publix has extended its employee insurance benefits to all legally married couples, including same-sex couples.
The company announced this week to employees that it would extend its health, dental and vision benefit plans to any legally married couple.
That means any married gay or lesbian couple who live in a state where same-sex marriage is legal will be able to opt for the benefits.
Publix operates almost 2,000 grocery shops in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The company will hold a 30-day enrolment period for employees in same-sex married couples.
The move was commended by same-sex marriage advocates.
