Poland: Bill to legalise gay registered partnerships fails for a third time

For the third time, a bill to allow gender-neutral registered partnerships has been rejected in Poland.

Earlier this week, a vote took place on the bill, which despite not allowing same-sex couples to adopt, would have allowed some legal protections.

The registered partnerships would have been open to gay and straight couples.

Failing by a fairly narrow margin, 185 MPs voted for the bill, with 235 against, and 18 abstentions.

The country recently celebrated as an LGBT campaigner won a mayoral election, and is what is thought to be the country’s first out gay mayor in the conservative country.

Robert Biedron gathered 57% of the ballot (15,308 votes), to become the mayor of Slupsk, which boasts 90,000 residents.
