Benedict Cumberbatch cast as main superhero in Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

The ‘Imitation Game’ star Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the title character in Marvel Comics’ upcoming film ‘Doctor Strange’.

Cumberbatch, who recently took to the big screen to play gay British codebreaker Alan Turing, will play neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange in the Marvel film due for a 2016 release.

The film will follow Strange who discovers alternate dimensions and magic after being injured in a car accident.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

The ‘Sherlock’ star last year officiated at a same-sex civil partnership for one of his closest friends.

Matthew Goode, who appeared alongside Cumberbatch in the Imitation Game, spoke in an interview last week to say he was “glad” the film didn’t include a gay sex scene.
