Danny Dyer: I don’t know why I’m a gay icon
Danny Dyer has said that he doesn’t know why he is considered a gay icon.
The EastEnders actor – who has previously appeared on the cover of Attitude – made the comments to the Daily Star.
He said: “I don’t know about this gay icon title I have been given.
“I know some gay men look up to me for some of the movies and plays I have done and they have always supported me quietly.
“I suppose being on EastEnders they are thinking: ‘Well done. We always knew you had it in you’.”
Dyer won acclaim earlier this year for a storyline in which his character’s son, played by Sam Strike, came out as gay.
He added: “Mick Carter is the closest I have played to myself. This gangster hardman s**t is all bollocks, you get pigeon holed.
“My life has changed, being a part of a show which I never thought I would be part of.”
Sam Strike revealed earlier this month that he would be quitting the soap.
The show received a torrent of homophobic abuse on Twitter in January this year, when Strike’s character locked lips with Danny Pennant (Gary Lucy).
However, the BBC told PinkNews that only 2 complaints were made about the kiss out of approximately 7.9 million viewers.
