Australian politician to introduce same-sex marriage bill

Senator David Leyonhjelm is expected to bring a bill before Australia’s upper house on Wednesday that could pave the way for same-sex marriage in the country.

Mr Leyonhjelm, who represents New South Wales, doesn’t believe government should interfere in people’s individual choices and freedoms.

The crossbench senator will outline the details of his legislation at a press conference tomorrow.

Last year, a bill to legalise same-sex marriage in New South Wales failed in a narrow vote of 19 to 21.

Federal attempts to pass the reform also failed in 2012.

Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader Tony Abbot remains opposed to equal marriage.

New South Wales became the third Australian state to recognise same-sex marriages conducted overseas last month.

Last week, New South Wales Liberal Party MP Don Harwin, who is also president of the state’s upper house, came out as gay in a Christmas message.
