Republican who said gays ‘should be discriminated against’: I am being discriminated against

A newly-elected Republican state congressman, who thinks that gay people deserve to be discriminated against, claims he is being “attacked” for his religious views.

Disgraced former Navy chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt won a seat in the Colorado House of Representatives recently, thinks gay people are posessed by demons, and proclaimed last year: “If your heart is full of corruption or sin or immorality – in this case, homosexuality – then you should be discriminated against.”

He has become known for his extreme anti-gay and transphobic outbursts, claiming last month: “Transgenders want your children. Liberals demand public access to rape your girls.”

He claimed earlier this year that gay soldiers would cause problems in the military by “taking breaks on the combat field to change diapers”, because their “treacherous sin” means they “lose control of their bowels”.

This week, Klingenschmitt claimed in an interview with David Pakman that people were “attacking” his religious views by quoting verbatim his own statements.

He said: “You’ve seen how they’re saying that disqualifies me for public office.

“Just because I hold my religious views as a former Navy chaplain does not disqualify me from running as a business leader.

“That doesn’t mean people should be attacking my religious views, and that was never part of my campaign for public office.”

Klingenschmitt – who genuinely believes trans people are possessed by demons and that gays are “worthy of death” – was elected by a landslide in District 15, polling nearly 70 percent of the vote, and thrashing his Democratic rival.

Klingenschmitt was thrown out of the Navy in 2006, by disobeying direct orders and wearing his uniform to right-wing protests.
