Green Party leader: David Cameron showed real ‘leadership’ and ‘courage’ over equal marriage

November 12, 2014

The leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett, has praised David Cameron for legalising same-sex marriage, saying he showed “real leadership” against his party.

In an interview with the election tracking website May 2015, Ms Bennett was asked to name one thing the Prime Minister has done well.

She replied: “Gay marriage … I think he showed some real leadership and some courage in taking on parts of his own party.”

In May last year, at third reading of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, 128 Conservative MPs voted against the reform, with only 117 voting in favour.

Writing exclusively for PinkNews in March on the weekend of the first same-sex marriages in England and Wales, the Prime Minister said: “Stability and happiness is immeasurable. That is not something that the State should ever deny someone on the basis of their sexuality. When people’s love is divided by law, it is the law that needs to change.”

Ms Bennett, a former journalist at the Guardian, took over from Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavillion, as leader of the Green Party in September 2012.

Earlier this month Ms Lucas was named MP of the Year at the PinkNews Awards in Parliament.
