A trans woman from Ohio had to have two life-saving surgeries after she was attacked in broad daylight this week by at least three men.

Toledo Blade reports Candice Milligan, 33, was punched, kicked, and robbed of her mobile phone in downtown Toledo.

The assailants, who shouted derogatory abuse during the assault, then fled the scene shortly after.

Milligan was later taken in critical condition to Mercy St Vincent Medical Center.

She had to have at least two surgeries since being hospitalised, including one to drain blood after she was found to have a hematomoa.

Doctors also wired Ms Milligan’s jaw shut because of a broken mandible.

Family members said they were expecting Ms Milligan to be discharged from the hospital today.

Gloria McCauley, executive director of Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organisation, said: “BRAVO is saddened to learn of the most recent hate crime assault.

“Sadly, we know that hate crime violence in its many forms are intended to instill the message of hate and fear throughout the entire community.

“Hate crimes largely go under-reported, or not reported at all, and people are left with restoring their sense of safety and security on their own.”

Last year, the death of Cemia Dove, also known as Ci Ci, a transgender woman from Ohio, was noted as a “likely” hate crime by a local Councillor.
