US: Golfer Patrick Reed apologises for swearing and saying ‘faggot’ on the course

Golfer Patrick Reed, who is currently playing the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, has apologised after he was caught using homophobic language after three-putting his shot on Thursday.

During the live transmission on Thursday, on-course microphones picked up the PGA player saying: “Nice f***ing three-putt you f***ing faggot.”

According to ESPN Golf, he has now apologised, saying: “Yesterday, I made a stupid error. Sorry for definitely the words that I said and everything that went on.

“Never should have happened. Unfortunately, it happened to me and all I can do is just learn from it and move on, hopefully continue playing well and keep giving fans something to watch.

“It’s something not to be proud of, and something that you definitely can’t have happen. Unfortunately, it got the best of me yesterday, and all I can do is not let it happen again.”

The PGA Tour has issued a statement, saying: “The PGA Tour Conduct Unbecoming regulations prohibit the use of obscene language on the golf course.

“The PGA Tour will deal with this matter internally in accordance with its regulations.”

In April, Bubba Watson, who voiced his support for a sports analyst who said gay NBA player Jason Collins’ coming out was an “open rebellion to God,” won the Masters.
