Jake Gyllenhaal: Brokeback Mountain ‘gave me the idea that movies can be important’
Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal has commented on the political significance of Brokeback Mountain, which he says gave him the idea that films can be “important.”
The 2005 film featured Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal playing Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist.
Speaking to Huffpost live, the 33-year-old said the film now “lives in its own space.”
He said: “It was at the time, culturally, it gave me the idea that movies can be important.
“That they do have some sort of political value… it’s become something beyond what any of us could have imagined.
“It’s a beautiful story and it was very successful in many different ways and so that’s what brought a lot of the attention…
“That film lives in its own space. It’s one of those films that’s no longer mine – it’s sort of everyone’s.”
In March 2011, Gyllenhaal joked that he understands why some people think he’s gay.
