The daughter of the Mayor of Houston was refused a driver’s license by the Texas Department of Public Safety – because she has two mothers.

According to Democratic Mayor Annise Parker – the first openly gay Mayor in Texas – the DPS refused to recognise her daughter Daniela Parker’s birth certificate as valid, because it has two female parents listed.

She tweeted: “Daughter needs drivers test. Has all docs, some in MomA name, some MomK, but w/ birth cert showing both. DPS says can only be from 1 mom!-A”

Texas does not prohibit same-sex adoption, but it refuses to issue birth certificates that reflect children of same-sex couples.

However, after the unwanted publicity from the Mayor, the administrators decided to accept the teen’s identification, and allow her to book a test.

The Mayor tweeted: “Finally! After 3rd trip to DPS w/ different sets of docs in an unnecessary paper chase, last child has her drivers license.

“Thank you to the DPS clerk & supervisor in the Rosenberg office who took the time to read my daughters documentation & realize it was OK.

“I’m just glad that on the third try someone cared enough to sort it out.”

Ms Parker has three children with her wife Kathy Hubbard – daughters Daniela Parker and Marquitta Parker, and foster son Jovon Tyler.

The DPS disputes her version of events, however, claiming to LoneStarQ: “All individuals applying for their first Texas driver license must provide a variety of documents to prove their identity, Social Security Number, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status, and Texas residency.

“In this case, the adult applicant did not initially present sufficient documentation to prove residency.

“Once she provided the required documentation, she was able to complete the transaction. There is no indication that any delay in the process was related to same-sex marriage.”
