In a deleted scene from Back to the Future, Marty McFly worried that hitting on his mother might make him gay.

The character – played by Michael J Fox in the classic 1985 time travel film – appears in the axed clip opposite a past version of Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), after the pair concoct a plan that involves McFly flirting with his own mother.

In the clip, McFly says: “I don’t know, Doc. It’s just this whole thing with my mother. I just don’t know if I can go through with hitting on her.

“I can’t believe I’m going to feel up my own mother. This is the kind of thing that could screw me up permanently. What if I go back to the future and I end up being… gay?”

However, the word ‘gay’ had not yet become associated with homosexuality in 1955, and gets lost in translation – leading a confused Doc to ask: “Why shouldn’t you be happy?”

The scene came to light on the film’s DVD release.
