A court office in the US state of Kansas has become the first to issue a marriage licence to a same-sex couple.

The unnamed couple attended the Johnson County District Court office, which has confirmed that they married there.

Despite that the state still has a ban on same-sex marriage, Chief Judge Kevin Moriarty two days ago directed clerks and judges to begin issuing marriage licences to same-sex marriage.

Kansas voters approved a constitutional amendment stating that marriage can only be between one man and one woman.

On Monday the US Supreme Court refused to take up appeals in five states against rulings to allow same-sex couples to marry.
