US: Cyndi Lauper opens shelter for homeless gay young people in the Bronx
Pop singer Cyndi Lauper is helping to open a shelter in the Bronx for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people.
Lauper, who is a gay icon and equality campaigner, is helping the launch of True Colors Bronx, which will be used to shelter 30 LGBT young adults with a history of homelessness in studio apartments.
She said in a statement: “I am honored to work with them and to witness how the True Colors Residence impacts the lives of these young people and provides them a pathway to live the happy, healthy and productive lives they deserve.”
Colleen Jackson, the nonprofit’s executive director, said: “I came back to her with a plan for permanent supportive housing and asked if we could call it the True Colors Residence.
“She agreed and continued her involvement by helping to promote and support the project in any way she could.”
Lauper also launched a similar housing project for LGBT homeless young people in New York in 2010.
In 2012, she launched The Forty to None Project aimed at empowering and advocating on behalf of homeless gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth, and raising awareness of the problems they face.
