Tory MP Gerald Howarth: David Cameron has ‘done damage’ with same-sex marriage

Tory MP Sir Gerald Howarth has attacked Conservative leader David Cameron for his role in introducing same-sex marriage.

The Conservative MP for Aldershot was staunchly opposed to the introduction of equal marriage in England and Wales, and last May warned of the dangers of the “aggressive homosexual community”.

According to Huffington Post, the politician said at a Tory party conference fringe this week: “I would take one side swipe at [Cameron]. I think he has done damage on gay marriage. I don’t think that was a good move.”

He also claimed that the Church of England leadership had “failed” to be “judgemental” enough about people’s lifestyle.

His comments echo those of veteran Tory MP David Davis, who branded marriage equality a “political disaster” earlier this week.

Mr Davis noted a loss of Tory members following the introduction of same-sex marriage, saying: “Politically it was a disaster. I had lunch with a loyal Cabinet minister who said he had lost 24 members in a week.”

A poll of more than 1,000 Conservative councillors this week also found 60% disagree with David Cameron’s decision to legalise same-sex marriage – with one councillor suggesting the PM has played “God” over the issue.

Only 31% of Tory councillors surveyed felt it was the right thing to do – and 9% were not sure.
