Re-imagined gay Cinderella story opens at London LGBT theatre
A new season at the Above the Stag theatre in London’s Vauxhall has launched with a gay re-imagining of the classic fairytale, Cinderella.
The UK’s only LGBT theatre based in Vauxhall launches its new season with comedy ‘You Should Be So Lucky’ after a sell-out summer with ‘Bathhouse The Musical!’
The play, by Charles Busch, tells the story of Christopher, a shy and eccentric young electrologist, who helps an elderly millionaire, Mr Rosenberg, when the old man faints in the street. Touched by his kindness, Rosenberg sends Christopher to a fabulous charity ball to meet his Prince Charming – in the form of a neurotic young publicist.
When Rosenberg dies of a heart attack in Christopher’s electrologist chair, Christopher learns he is to inherit half the old man’s fortune – unless his embittered daughter manages to stop him.
But it’s not the last Christopher sees of Rosenberg. The old man turns up to help him in the guise of a very ghostly fairy Godfather.
Andrew Beckett directs the new production of Busch’s New York hit, in a style reminiscent of the great screwball comedies of the1930s.
You Should Be So Lucky opened on 17 September and runs until 18 October.
