A Tennessee man has erected a billboard claiming that gay sex is an “abomination”.

The sign, stationed in Portland, Tennessee, quotes a line from Leviticus that reads: “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman. It is an abomination.”

It was purchased by resident Ronnie Monday, who said: “I hate to see America turn their back on God.

“When the president came out and indicated that he thought that gay marriage was OK, that was pretty much the last straw. I thought, God needs his voice out.”

The billboard has been in place for four months so far, with another six to go.

Chris Sanders of the Tennessee Equality Project told WSMV: “It’s a free country. The man has the right to put it up there. We’re not questioning that; we’re questioning whether it’s the right message.

“We hate to see anything in a community that encourages that kind of divisiveness, picking on people.”

Some critics have mocked the reliance of the billboard on a quote from Leviticus – a book of the bible that also bans eating shellfish, mixing fabrics in clothing and touching unclean animals, which is mostly disregarded by modern Christians.

Last week a ‘God Loves Gays’ billboard was unveiled in the hometown of the notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church, after a succesful crowdfunding campaign.
