Watch: Scottish independence re-imagined as gay romantic comedy

A web series re-imagining the Scottish independence referendum as a gay romantic comedy has launched.

United Queendom, created by filmmaker Bob Denham, spoofs the independence dilemma, telling the story of Scott and Adrian, two lovers on the verge of breaking up.

The four-part series, which launched today, covers the pair’s turbulent relationship as Scott decides he wants to go it alone, while the pair squabble over the proceeds from his bath oils company, and Adrian worries he will end up footing the bill.

The show also has its own twist, with viewers able to vote on whether the couple should stay together or split.

The series launches ahead of Scotland’s real-life independence referendum, set to take place on September 18, with recent polls showing the Yes campaign for independence leading by two points.

Creator Bob Denham said: “I just felt the whole debate was missing something very British – humour.”

English actor Daniel Page, who plays Adrian, added: “Politics should be poked fun at. I think it is actually a way of people engaging and in a way understand what is going on.”

Glasgow-born Damien Hughes, who plays Scott, added: “Politics is both incredibly important and incredibly ridiculous. People are really starting to wonder who these people are that run our countries.”

The LGBT wing of the Yes campaign last week released a Rainbow Paper, which outlines measures to ensure equality in an independent Scotland.

However, Edinburgh-based equality lawyer Daniel Donaldson claimed the paper was “misleading” and “flawed”.
