US: City Council to consider allowing same-sex domestic partner benefits

The City Council in Winston-Salem is to consider whether or not to allow benefits to the domestic partners of same-sex couples.

The meeting on Tuesday of a council committee will see the issue debated, reports local media.

Accoridng to city officials, same-sex couples already married in other parts of the US are already recognised for the benefits.

The director of Human Resources last month wrote to employees saying they would recognises the marriage licences from any state.

Same-sex marriage is legal in 19 states and the District of Columbia.
