The director of The Expendables 3 has hinted that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character in the film is in a relationship with Jet Li’s.

In one of the final scenes of the film, Schwarzenegger’s action hero Trench is seen cuddling with Li’s Yin Yang in a bar.

As the pair cuddle, Barney Ross (Silvester Stallone) exclaims “You guys want to get a room?”, to which Trench replies “We don’t need a room!”

The moment left fans wondering whether the film was inferring that the pair are actually a couple – a theory which director Patrick Hughes has lent his support to.

When asked by Grantland whether the two characters are romantically involved, Hughes replied: “I believe they are.”

If true, it is a departure both for the film series – built on macho image and bravado – and for Schwarzenegger’s career, having never before portrayed a gay person on screen.

Schwarzenegger, who is the former Republican governor of California, had a negative approach to gay rights through his political career, vetoing two same-sex marriage bills, once in 2005 and again in 2007.

He also presided over the introduction of Proposition 8, which constitutionally banned same-sex marriage in the state, and claimed marriage is “between a man and a woman”.

However, Schwarzenegger has performed two same-sex wedding ceremonies himself, despite claiming not to support them.
