A Democratic congressional candidate for a conservative district in the US state of Utah has invited a gay activist to speak at a fundraiser.

Donna McAleer faces Representative Rob Bishop in a second round of a battle which began two years ago.

Bishop won by nearly 3-to-1 the first time around.

But McAleer has brought in Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer of the Washington State National Guard, who is known for fighting against the now defunct ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.’

“If it hurt me, I wouldn’t be doing it,” said McAleer of the appearance at her $100 per head fundraiser.

Cammermeyer’s story was the subject of ‘Serving in Silence’, which starred Glenn Close.

“She’s a role model to many in the Army for her leadership,” McAleer said. “And she’s somebody I knew of as a lieutenant, and whose career and leadership I watched and learned from.”
