Lawyers in North Carolina are calling for a quick ruling to overturn the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Following an appeals court ruling earlier this week in the state of Virginia which could allow gay and lesbian couples to marry from next week, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has asked for a quick ruling in North Carolina.

Federal Judge William Osteen has put no time limitation on when he might rule on North Carolina’s ban.

The ACLU made a new court filing stating that the judge should overturn North Carolina’s ban, based on the precedent set in Virginia.

The Attorney General in the state Roy Cooper, has already said it is “futile” to keep fighting the lawsuit.
