Actor and activist George Takei has helped Camp Abercorn, a web series based partly on the anti-gay policies of the Boy Scouts of America, meet its fundraising goal.

Camp Abercorn follows a summer in the lives of Compass Guide leaders at a scout camp. One of the story lines is that of a gay Compass Guide leader who struggles to hide his sexuality to keep his position.

Takei posted on Facebook Friday evening, asking his over 7.4 million followers to donate to Camp Abercorn‘s IndieGoGo campaign.

Takei, a former Boy Scout himself, said in his Facebook post: “This is an excellent new web series in the final hours of its crowd funding campaign.

“The filmmaker—a gay Eagle Scout—shines light on the Boy Scouts of America, both what it stands for, and the controversies it still faces.

“As a former Boy Scout myself, it pains me deeply that the BSA still boots out gay scouts when they turn 18.

“This web series will help educate and inform, as well as entertain. That gets a big thumbs up from me.

“Let’s make this happen—even a few dollars could help them meet their goal tonight.”

Takei’s post came less than seven hours before Camp Abercorn‘s crowdfunding campaign ended.

The show was almost $10,000 (£5,900) short of its $100,000 (£59,600) goal at the time of Takei’s post, according to The Advocate.

The project raised $427 (£250) over its goal by the end of the campaign on Friday night.

The seven episode season of Camp Abercorn will be released on YouTube in coming months.

Producer Matt Andrews told The Wrap: “We are so thankful to George Takei. The next challenge is convincing him to be in the show.”
