Several Strictly Come Dancing stars have come out in favour of allowing same-sex dance couples on the show.

Professional dancer Ola Jordan, who has appeared on the show since 2006, told the Star: “Let’s try it. Why not?

“I don’t know if the audience is ready. But unless you try you won’t know.

“I think there will be pressure from fans for Strictly to do it. So if it’s not this year, hopefully it’ll happen next year.

“I’ve never danced with a woman so I don’t know how that would be. But I’d give it a go. Women move in a different way to men, so it would be a new challenge to think about.

Judge Craig Revel Horwood, who has appeared on every series of the show, added: “I think they should have two men or two women together. It might be the right time, with gay marriage a national debate.

“Why not? I would love to see it.”

However, out dancer Robin Windsor told the paper he is not sure if the time is right to introduce the element to the show.

He said: “I’m not sure if the British public are ready for it on the main show.

“But I think it would be a good idea to do it on a Children In Need special or the Christmas show.

“It would be a good way to test the waters. Then, if the public love it, why not go all out and do it for a full series? I’m up for anything.”

The British Dance Council recently announced a proposal that would define a dance partnership as having to consist of a “man” and a “lady” in all competitions, unless otherwise stated.

Last year, Gok Wan said he would only appear on the reality show if he was allowed to dance with a man.
