Modern Family star: Rick Santorum wanted a picture with me, but I refused because of his anti-gay views

Nick Duffy July 24, 2014

Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet has revealed that he refused to take a picture with Republican Rick Santorum because of his anti-gay views

Stonestreet, who is straight, stars as gay character Cameron Tucker in the acclaimed series.

Speaking to Huffington Post this week, he revealed that he was shocked when Santorum, known for his anti-gay views, requested a picture at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

He said: “One of my favourite events is the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. I have people that you would be shocked that wanted pictures with me

“Rick Santorum wanted a picture with me. It was at a time when he was publicly saying, ‘Gay marriage, gay marriage [is wrong],’ and I’m like, ‘You know, I can’t do it’.

“It was with him and his kids or something like that, and I said, ‘I’d be happy to take a picture with the kids’, but I can’t just be in a picture with [him].”

He also said: “President Obama mentioned in an interview like three weeks ago that Michelle and the kids watch Mitch and Cam and they’re in tears.

“To hear the leader of the free world, the president of the United States, say that and to know we have that sort of reach with people and that the people in power and leadership are watching the show [is incredible].”

Santorum recently claimed that people who oppose gay rights are being sent to ‘re-education’ camps, while appearing on the radio show of extremist host Bryan Fischer.

On the same show earlier this year, Bryan Fischer claimed that “homosexual stormtroopers” had brought back slavery.

Last month, he claimed that same-sex marriage would hurt the economy by destroying families.
