Michael Sam’s football jersey is the sixth most sold this season across the entire NFL.

Sam made history when he was drafted by the St Louis Rams in May, a few months after publicly coming out.

According to the NFL’s official shop, following his draft to the Rams, Sam’s jersey has become not only the team’s best selling, but the sixth best selling across the entire NFL, outselling several footballing superstars.

His placement on the list is the second-highest for a defensive player, behind only Super Bowl-winning Seahawks player Richard Sherman, and the second-highest for a rookie, behind Johnny Manziel.

The statistics show that sales have not slid since his draft May, when his jersey shot to the second-highest for rookie sales.

Sam accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs last week, delivering an emotional speech and receiving two standing ovations.

“This year I had a lot of experience being part of something bigger than myself. At times, I felt like I’d been living in a massive storm, without knowing when the storm will end. But I’m here tonight to tell you that the lessons I learned about love, respect and being true to yourself will never leave me.

“The way I see it, my responsibility at this moment in history is to stand up for everyone out there who wants nothing to be themselves openly.

“I promise to spend the rest of my life trying to live up to this honor and trying to become the best football player I can.”
