Simon Cowell rejects ‘antiquated’ claims that he is gay from Tulisa drugs trial
Management for music producer Simon Cowell have released a statement refuting claims made during N Dubz Tulisa’s trial, that he is gay.
Former X-Factor judge and N Dubz singer Tulisa went on trial last week, accused of attempting to set up a drug deal with undercover Sun on Sunday journalist Mazher Mahmood.
Southwark Crown Court heard that Tulisa’s manager Gareth Varey had an exchange with Mahmood, who posed as a film producing Sheik, during which Varey said he knew men who had slept with music producer Cowell.
In a secret recording, Mahmood asked Varey whether Cowell was gay, to which he responded “yes”.
Since the claim was made, representatives for X-Factor judge Cowell, said they had intended to make a statement “as soon as possible”, but could not do so without breaking contempt of court rules.
In a statement today, Cowell’s management said: “Simon was referred to during the trial without forewarning, resulting in widespread media coverage of untrue claims regarding his private life.
“In 2014 the question of whether someone is or is not gay is antiquated. (As it happens he isn’t, though if he were, he would simply have said so).
“However, the issue was the false suggestion made by Mr Varey that Simon – who is renowned for his honesty and candidness – had thus not been truthful in the public arena and this is what we have been obliged to clarify.”
The trial of Tulisa over drugs allegations collapsed today as Judge Alistair McCreath told Southwark Crown Court he thought prosecution witness Mazher Mahmood may have lied giving evidence.
Simon Cowell and girlfriend Lauren Silverman recently celebrated the birth of their first child Eric. The couple later bought an apartment on the Upper East Side in New York.
