The head of the Family Research Council has admitted that “in the vast majority of cases” homosexual attraction is not a choice.

Tony Perkins – who has previously maintained that homosexuality can be cured – made the comments in a blog, responding to Texas Governor Rick Perry’s claims that homosexuality is like alcoholism.

He wrote: “Obviously, homosexual attractions are not a ‘choice’ in the vast majority of cases.

“[But] homosexual or heterosexual, people are responsible for their conduct. Have we come to the point that we are nothing more than our sexual urges?

“And that’s essentially the point Governor Perry was trying to make. But unfortunately for him, there’s no room for an honest conversation in Obama’s America.”

Earlier this week, Perkins was lambasted by Jewish groups for a “deeply offensive” comment comparing the gay rights movement to Nazis during the Holocaust.

He said: “I’m beginning to think, are re-education camps next? When are they going to start rolling out the boxcars to start hauling off Christians?”

The Anti-Defamation League said in a statement: “There is no comparison between contemporary American political issues and the actions of Hitler’s regime during the Holocaust.

“Such inappropriate analogies only serve to trivialize the Holocaust and are deeply offensive to Jews and other survivors, as well as those Americans who fought valiantly against the Nazis in World War II.”
