An openly gay minister from Aberdeen today has said he hopes the Church of Scotland will reconsider its opposition to same-sex marriage.

Reverend Scott Rennie, who is at the centre of a debate around gay ministers in the church, said he hoped the Kirk would rethink its opposition to same-sex marriage.

He said: “I have no doubt that in the next while the Church will have some reflection on marriage and marriage as regards same-sex couples.

“I have no idea how soon or how long, but before the Church makes any move or change, it has to have time and space to think about it, and I’ve no doubt that reflection will be done sooner or later.”

While the appointment of Reverend Rennie to Aberdeen’s Queen’s Cross Church in 2009 has caused rifts in the church, including the loss of large numbers of worshippers, the Kirk yesterday came one step further to allowing gay ministers.

His appointment led to a two-year moratorium on new openly gay ministers.

The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland yesterday voted in favour of a proposal which could eventually lead to the ordination of ministers in civil partnerships.
