Gay UKIP candidate arrested over alleged sexual assault on homeless Bulgarian man

A UKIP candidate has been arrested following an alleged sexual assault on a homeless Bulgarian man.

Peter Lello, a gay civil servant, is standing as the party’s mayoral candidate in Lewisham, south-east London.

He was arrested on 15 May after an allegation of sexual assault made four days earlier.

The assault is alleged to have taken place either on the evening of 2 May or the early hours of 3 May at an address in Lewisham.

Mr Lello has since been bailed following his arrest.

The Metropolitan Police Service said: “Detectives from Lewisham are investigating an allegation of sexual assault.

“The allegations was made to police on Sunday, 11 May.

“The assault is alleged to have taken place either the evening of 2 May or the early hours of 3 May.”
