US: Clergy members challenge North Carolina same-sex marriage ban with lawsuit
A lawsuit challenging the US state of North Carolina’s same-sex marriage ban was today filed by clergy members in the state.
The clergy members argue that their religious freedom is violated by the ban, as they would like to perform same-sex marriages in their congregations, but are legally unable to.
Filed on Monday on behalf of the United Church of Christ and a dozen clergy members, the lawsuit says the ban puts clergy members in a difficult situation as they know they will break the law if they marry same-sex couples.
The attorney acting on behalf of the clergy members and the church Jake Sussman says the lawsuit opens up a new frontier in the fight for equal marriage in the US.
