Golfer who agrees that being gay is ‘an open rebellion to God’ wins Masters

Joseph McCormick April 15, 2014

A golfer who voiced his support for a sports analyst who said gay NBA player Jason Collins’ coming out was an “open rebellion to God” has won the Masters.

35-year-old Bubba Watson from Florida on 13 April won the Masters and picked up the $1.6 million (£950,000) prize.

Jason Collins last year spoke about his sexuality, confirming he is gay in an article in Sports Illustrated magazine. He said: “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.

Watson then tweeted his approval when Chris Broussard, a senior writer for ESPN Magazine said on air that Jason Collins’ coming out as gay was an “open rebellion to God”.

The golf star tweeted “Thanks… for sharing your faith and the bible. #GodIsGood.”

He later tweeted to say that he did not think he was “better than anyone else”, and that he would go to dinner with Collins, should the NBA star ask.

This week’s win for Watson was his second in three years.
