University of Illinois to consider adding gender reassignment to health insurance plan

Joseph McCormick March 6, 2014

The University of Illinois will on Thursday vote on whether to add cover for gender reassignment cover to health insurance plans used by many students.

Trustees will vote on Thursday on whether the cover will be added to the policy, popular with over 40,000 students at the Urbana-Champaign campus.

They have said that a rise in price of 15% could come into effect, but that it is mainly due to the federal Affordable Care Act, rather than the addition of gender reassignment.

The 15% increase would translate into an increase of $37 per semester (£22).

The cover had already been added at the University’s Chicago Campus, following the request of some students.

The possibility of moral objections by parents was raised by trustees.
