‘First public gay wedding’ takes place in Burma
The first traditional and public same-sex ‘wedding’, has taken place in Burma.
Despite not carrying legal recognition, the wedding between Tin Ko Ko and Myo Min Htet signified a move forward in terms of LGBT equality in the conservative state.
The pair married on Sunday at an upmarket Yangon hotel in a ceremony which stayed close to traditions and customs of other Burmese weddings.
“My family accepted me. I am so glad that my parents were understanding… but he had to overcome many difficulties from his family,” said Tin Ko Ko, 38.
Both human rights campaigners, the paird have lived together for ten years, but this was the first time they had publicly declared their relationship.
Despite there being a law against same-sex relations, it is rarely enforced. However, gay rights activists have complained for a long time about harassment and discrimination.
Homosexuality as a taboo appears to have relaxed in the past few years, however.
The pair cut a heart-shaped cake as onlookers cheered.
