Reports from a newspaper in Nigeria claim that a woman in the country disowned her cat which she suspected was gay.

The Leadership newspaper published an article which said an unnamed middle-aged woman in the Lafia area “publicly disowned her cat”, a pet she had kept for seven years.

The reason? She suspected what she called “an unnatural sexual behaviour”, which she found “a contradiction of the laws of nature”.

In other words, she thought the cat was gay.

According to the newspaper, the cat was the first to have ever been publicly declared gay, and the first to be disowned by its owner.

The paper went on to say that the animal named Bull, had made “sexual advances only to other male cats in the house even though there are several other female cats.”

It went on to say that neighbours had speculated that, because no kittens had been born to the female cats which matched Bull’s colour, he had not been able to mate with the females.

The owner had “expressed a strong belief in the divine purpose of creating male and female of every creature to fulfil an ordained purpose of procreation.”

She said: “Anybody interested in this gay cat can have it because I have no further use of it.”

Sadly, nobody turned up to take the cat, the report went on, although many came to see the house to see where the incident had taken place, and others made jokes about the public declaration.

The Leadership describes itself as “not a regional or sectional paper. It is a national paper symbolically embedded in the nation’s capital.”

There has been worldwide condemnation of Nigeria after the country’s President, Goodluck Jonathan, signed into law a draconian anti-gay bill.

Anyone who enters into a same-sex marriage or civil union may be jailed for up to 14 years. The law also bans people who register, operate or participate in gay clubs, societies or organisations, or who publicly show that they are in a same-sex relationship.

Last year, a dog in Tennessee was rescued, after being left at a kennel by his owner who thought he was gay. He had been scheduled to be put down.
