Sir Elton John and David Furnish have come fifth in the London Evening Standard’s 10 most influential couples.

“The legendary musician and his film producer partner put the fun into philanthropy by throwing glamorous fundraisers for good causes, notably combating AIDS,” the paper said. “Elton’s Oscars night party is a fixture of the Hollywood calendar and, as doting parents to two boys, they form London’s most celebrated civil partnership.”

The couple were ahead of Homeland star Damian Lewis and his wife, the actress Helen McCrory, and BBC Newsnight editor Ian Katz and his wife, the founder of Mumsnet, Justine Roberts.

Telegraph Media Group executive director Lord Black – a former spin doctor for the Tories – and his civil partner Mark Bolland were the other same-sex couple on the list: they reached number nine.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge topped the list. David Beckham and Victoria Beckham were second, Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha Cameron came third.

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney and his wife Diana Carney were ahead of Sir Elton and David Furnish at fourth.

Labour press secretary Tom Baldwin and his wife, the publisher Rebecca Nicolson, came tenth.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sir Elton John announced he wouldn’t be cancelling a planned Moscow concert in December despite the country’s anti-gay laws. He said: “As a gay man, I can’t leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’ve got to go.”
