London HIV charity marks 25 years of nutrition services for people living with HIV
London HIV charity The Food Chain is marking 25 years of nutrition services for people living with HIV with a 25km walk.
On Saturday 21st September, volunteers and supporters of The Food Chain will celebrate the milestone with a 25km walk from East Dulwich to Camden, linking all three of the charity’s kitchens.
Those taking part in the ‘Silver Apple Walk’ are encouraged to spot the 25 apples hidden along the route.
In 2011 the charity was awarded a £1 million sponsorship from the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and has since moved to a new office near King’s Cross, giving the organisation access to a kitchen 7 days a week for the first time.
Over 600 volunteers help to prepare meals each week which are home delivered to people affected by HIV in north-west London. The Food Chain prepares Sunday meals as well as hosting specialised cookery and nutrition classes and a weekly communal lunch service.
The anniversary walk starts at the East Dulwich kitchen, linking to the Highgate Day Centre and ending at Acorn House, Camden. If you are interested in joining the Silver Apple Walk or volunteering with The Food Chain, you can visit www.foodchain.org.uk.
Since 1989 the charity has provided vital support to HIV-positive people struggling to access the food they need due to ill-health or poverty.
