HBO’s Girls creator Lena Dunham said she won’t marry until gay people can

Lena Dunham, star of HBO series, Girls, said at the Golden Globes that she was not engaged, despite wearing a diamond ring, and vowed that she won’t marry until gay people can.

Ms Dunham, who also created the hit TV series, announced that, despite wearing the ring, she was not engaged to her boyfriend, Jack Antonoff, of the band Fun., at the Golden Globes on Sunday evening.

Her declaration that she was not engaged came as a surprised to some, as despite rumours that the couple only started dating in September 2012, she referred to Mr Antonoff as “family” in an acceptance speech at the awards, saying: “I want to say thank you to my family, Laurie, Grace, Tip and now Jack.”

She then said backstage that she didn’t want to get married until marriage equality was achieved.

“I don’t want to get married until all gay people can get married,” Ms Dunham said, according to the Daily Mail.

Despite making a similar vow, in April 2012, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie gave up their pledge not to marry until every couple in the United States can do the same, gay or straight. The couple had indicated that they were facing pressure from their children to formalise their relationship.

Later in the year, Hollywood star Brad Pitt agreed to donate $100,000 (£62,000) to help the Human Rights Campaign raise money for its efforts to support equal marriage initiatives in several US states.

Jason Mraz also made a similar declaration in 2011, speaking about his engagement to Tristan Prettyman, he said it would be difficult but that he would wait.

“The wedding would be nice for our family, our friends, our community, our moms especially, and so it puts us in the fight. We can’t get married until marriage is legal and equal… I think giving people the right to marry will be a huge movement in civil rights.”
